Teenage Pitch & Putt star Brendan Lawlor is an All Ireland Champion after winning the 2013 Gents Intermediate Strokeplay title in Rocklodge Co. Cork last weekend.
Last year 16 year old Brendan claimed the Adult Leinster Intermediate Strokeplay title as a 15 year old and he has followed that up by winning the national title.
Brendan gave a masterclass in Cork as he followed up a rather average first round with a sensational second round to win the title with a comfortable four shot margin.
The Louth Village teenager honed his considerable skills at the Channonrock Pitch & Putt course where he has been playing since he turned six years old. He admits he was feeling quietly confident heading to Cork having played well in qualifying for the finals.
“I was head qualifier in Co. Louth so I knew I was playing well and I thought I was in with a chance. You play two rounds of 18 holes in the All-Ireland and I had a pretty average first round scoring 53 which left me a few shots behind the leaders.” explained Brendan.
“I came out for the second round feeling a bit less confident but I had a great start and scored five 2s in a row which sent me shooting up the leaderboard. I felt great at that stage and I was hitting the ball beautifully.
“By the time I reached the last nine holes I was leading the competition and suddenly there were big crowds starting to watch me and I have to admit I was starting to get a bit nervous at that stage” he laughed.
However Brendan managed to keep his composure and finished his second round with a spectacular 43 which left him four shots clear of his nearest rival and the winner of the prestigious Intermediate Strokeplay title.
“I was delighted when I was handed the cup and very pleased with my performance as I had never played that course before. It’s my biggest win to date and it means I am eligible to enter the Mens Senior Competition next year which is the absolute best players in Ireland. It’ll be a lot harder but I’m already looking forward to the challenge”, added a delighted Brendan.
