Damewits reunite for charity

Local cabaret duo The Damewits are taking to the stage once more to try and raise some money for local charities ‘Cara Cancer Care Centre’ and ‘The Maria Goretti Foundation’. The Damewits formed back in the golden days of the Maytime Festival as a reaction to the male-dominated acts that were commonplace around that time. According to Damewits duo Maura Baldwin and Christine Larkin their fun filled show will be resurrected for one night only in the Spirit Store in aid of the above mentioned local charities.
“We began the show in the Maytime Festival in Dundalk as we felt there needed to be something done to address the rampant misogyny which was common in a lot of the shows around at the time. Thankfully people enjoyed our act and we were very well received almost from the get go.
“We enjoyed plenty of success back in our heyday and toured our cabaret show around the country including a week-long run in the Andrew’s Lane Theatre in Dublin. An invite from Gay Byrne to play on the Late Late Show came off the back of that and it was a really enjoyable time for both of us,” explained Maura.
“We were always accompanied by the late great Ann King on piano and this show will be in memory of her. We also have a tribute to Victoria Wood who died recently of cancer as she was a great influence to us,” stated Christine.
“We are very busy in rehearsals at the moment getting ready for our show on Friday October 12 and we will have Fionnuala Morgan on piano this time around. The whole thing is like a comedy cabaret and will include songs, poems, monologues and comedy all with a feminist flavour. There will be sketches about Dundalk and we speak in a variety of accents throughout the show. The emphasis as always will be on fun and laughter and it is very exciting for us to be about to take to the stage once more,” added Christine.
Bernard Dunne will be the MC for the evening and there will be a major raffle during the interval with plenty of wonderful spot prizes which have been kindly donated by businesses all around town. Tickets cost just €10 and can be bought at MINT jewellers on Earl Street. This is the best way to get your ticket to guarantee a seat at the show as this show is expected to sell out quickly.
