A 20-year-old man has appeared before a special sitting of Dundalk District Court charged in connection with last Saturday’s fatal road crash on the N1 at Carrickarnan.
Three people died and a fourth person was injured in the two car collision on the northbound carriageway, close to the border. Keith Lennon of Forest Park, Dromintee, Co. Armagh was remanded in custody and will appear before Cloverhill District Court tomorrow. At the special sitting of Dundalk District Court Keith Lennon was charged with dangerous driving causing the deaths of Mary and Kevin Faxton and Bryan Magill on the N1 in the early hours of last Saturday February 29. He was also charged with failing to report the collision to Gardaí.
Following the sitting, Judge Deirdre Gearty refused bail while expressing the court’s sympathy to the families involved.
At approximately 2.15am on February 29 Gardaí and emergency services were called to the scene of a two-car collision on the N1 at Carrickarnan. The occupants of one of the cars, a male (50s) and a female (80s), were pronounced dead at the scene. A man in his 20s travelling in the second car was taken by ambulance to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. His injuries are not thought to be life-threatening, while a second male (20s) also in this car was pronounced dead at the scene.
All three deceased have since been removed to the mortuary at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda where post-mortem examinations took place. The crash site and cars involved were examined by Garda forensic collision investigators and local scenes of crime officers.
