Last April when faced with the prospect of months stuck at home and cut off from all his pals in RehabCare, Dundalk, Domhnall Flynn decided to pass the days by picking up a pen and writing down some of the highlights of his life to date. Last week on his 40th birthday the very popular Mountpleasant man received the fruits of his labour as his autobiography entitled ‘My life story so far’ was delivered to him packed full of photos and stories chronicalling his life to date.
And what a life it has been! Domhnall has rubbed shoulders with the rich and famous over the years including President Mary McAleese, Ronaldo, Paul McGrath, Ryan Giggs, Giovanni Trappatoni, Steve Davis and Dennis Taylor and they all get a mention in the book. The book’s 100 pages are filled with humourous tales and fond memories including the time he told Dr McAleese that he’d ‘been in more beds than Julio Iglesias’ when asked by the then President’s husband about his love for gardening.
Domhnall who grew up in Bay Estate before moving to Plaster, Mountpleasant was understandably proud to have completed the book and thanked all his friends and family for their help in making his dream turn into a reality.
“I’m proud of the book as it is all my own work and I really enjoyed putting it together. I want to thank my Mam who helped me make sure all the spelling was ok and also to Gerard Roe, Paudi Breen and Sandy Sneddon who have always been there to help me whenever I needed anything. I am not charging anybody for the book but if they would like to take one off me I would ask that they donate something to the St Vincent de Paul.
“I am a big lover of watching sports and found it quite boring when everything was locked down last year so after talking to my friend Gerard we decided that it would be a good idea to try and put some sort of book together about my life,” explained Domhnall.
According to Gerard Roe, who works in RehabCare, Carroll Village his pal Domhnall was inspired to write the book due to the lack of anything going on during the first lockdown last year.
“As we all know everything shut down and there was no sports to watch on tv and RehabCare was closed so we were calling around to the residents with activity packs. Domhnall is really smart and he was finishing his packs really quickly and getting bored with nothing to do so I said to him to start a wee project and write down all the incidents he could recall throughout his life. He got really stuck into it and after a lot of hard work he recently sent about 100 pages to the printer which came back this week as a fully formed book. We are all very proud of him and he has done a great job putting it all together. It was delivered on his 40th birthday this week so it is basically a look back on his forty years on this planet. I look forward to reading the sequel when he turns 80,” laughed Gerard.
If anybody would like to get a copy of Domhnall’s book they can contact Paudie, Gerard or Sandy at RehabCare Carroll Village on 0429328766. There is no charge for the book but Domhnall has asked for a donation to be made to St Vincent de Paul in lieu of payment.
