THE owner of a Dundalk pharmacy has said demand for the one-shot Janssen Covid-19 vaccine among 18 to 34-year-olds is “very high”.
Dermot Leavy of Leavy’s Pharmacy on Clanbrassil Street told the Dundalk Leader that within an hour of opening on Friday, July 2, 40 people had registered their interest in getting the vaccine.
“There is great demand for it. We are only providing the Janssen vaccine at the moment. There are five vaccines to each vial,” he said.
“Once a vial is opened it has to be used within three hours as the HSE doesn’t want any wastage. We need five people to come at synchronised times/
“There can be no no-shows. We still have to run the rest of the pharmacy business alongside the vaccination programme.”
Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly announced an expansion of the vaccination roll-out programme to younger people from this week.
From Monday, July 5 people aged 18-34 have been able to register with pharmacies to opt-in for the Janssen vaccine.
“I absolutely welcomed the news especially when talking about the Delta variant which is more transmissible,” said Dermot.
“Vaccination offers protection and you are less likely to end up in hospital or the ICU after being vaccinated.
“Ireland, as a nation, we are a pro-vaccination country. The anti-vax people are a tiny minority in Ireland. We are streets ahead of everyone in Europe for the uptake of the vaccine.”
