‘A stroll for Gavin’ will take place across the Cooley mountains later this month to raise money for two charities close to John Morris’s heart. John, who hails from Fatima, received the heart-breaking news last January that his son Gavin had taken his own life in Germany.
Gavin had been working in Kiel and following his death John was faced with the daunting task of bringing his son’s body back to Ireland. According to John he would have been lost but for the help of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust.
The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust helps families who have lost loved ones tragically abroad. The group was set up in 2013 by Co Down couple Colin and Eithne Bell following the death of their son Kevin in New York and over the past nine years it has helped repatriate many people from Australia, the States, Europe and further afield to their families in Ireland.
“We brought Gavin home on the day he should have been celebrating his 30th birthday. It was a very painful time but Myself and my family will forever be indebted to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust who were brilliant in helping us take Gavin home to Ireland.
“I’m from Fatima but we lived in Cooley for many years and myself and Jock McArdle have decided to organise a walk across the Cooley mountains in Gavin’s memory which will hopefully raise money for two charities, Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust and SOSAD, both of which are close to my heart. Jock, unfortunately, has also had to lean on the Kevin Bell Repatriation trust who helped bring his son’s body home from Vietnam a few years ago.
“We have set up a GoFundMe page and we also have sponsorship cards so if anybody wants to help they can contact either myself or Jock or go to the GoFundMe page and hopefully we can raise a decent amount for both charities.
“The walk will take place on Saturday 27th August and will begin and end at John Long’s Pub. We have walks for all levels of fitness and Fast Walkers will start at 10:30am, Moderate walkers at 10:45 and families at 11am. We have plenty of walkers from local walking groups already signed up and we invite anybody who would like to come and support two great charities to join us on the 27th of August for a lovely walk across the Cooley mountains,” stated John.
If anybody would like a sponsorship card or find out more info about the walk they can contact either John on 0877500357 or Jock on 0863954830. Donation/Registration costs €20 and there are three ways of donating. You can register on the day of the walk (27th August), fill out a sponsorship card or donate on the GoFundMe website by typing in A Stroll for Gavin in the search bar. A bus from Boyd’s Car Park, Dundalk will leave at 9:30am sharp on the 27th August but only if there is demand for one. Please contact Jock or John if you intend on taking a bus to Longs Pub in Cooley.
Registration takes place at 10am and there will be light refreshments, music a raffle and spot prizes on the day.
